Membership Questions
What does EA affiliation mean?
England Athletics (EA) are the governing body for our sport in England. Club affiliation (us) and subsequent athlete registration (you) to them form part of the UKA (United Kingdom Athletics) Rules for Competition, which govern nearly all races and competitions you come across in this country. Eligibility to enter certain competitions/events/races as a club or individual depends on affiliation (club) and registration (individual) status.
Why Join an Affiliated athletics club?
As a Ryston Runners member you have the opportunity to take part in our various team events such as league matches, and as an affiliated athlete there are often discounts for individual entry events, plus discounts with various commercial partners too.
But the benefits of being part of an England Athletics affiliated club are far deeper than that, as you can have confidence in the quality of coaching and officiating at club events, and have the protection of a club signed up to its governing bodies’ policies and regulation, including welfare and safeguarding, public liability insurance cover, access to coaching development, etc.
What does First/Second Claim mean?
England Athletics define the rules of competition for athletics clubs. Most, but not all, competitions and road races in England are run under the England Athletics rules.
Under the rules an athlete may compete for up to two clubs. One of these is known as the First Claim Club and the other optional club is the Second Claim Club. Only the athlete’s First Claim Club pay the athlete’s affiliation fee to England Athletics.
You can only have a Second Claim Club if you are affiliated by your First Claim Club.
If you compete in an event in which your First and Second Claim Clubs are in contention then you must represent your First Claim Club. If the competition does not offer a team prize then you may compete for either club, but it is always best to check first.
Can I try it first before I join?
Yes! Just get in touch. You won't be able to pull on the club vest in a race before you join, but attend our training sessions and see if its right for you, by all means.
What if I don't want to or can't compete?
Members are always welcome to train with us with no need to compete.
If you are not actively training or competing but want to stay 'in the loop' on club matters, or are someone that just wants to help out in a volunteering capacity then please get in touch with the membership secretary. We can add you to our email distribution lists so that you can stay up to date with what's going on.
